What Is PS Plastic?

Polystyrene, commonly known as PS, is a plastic material widely used in the injection molding process. It is a cost-effective and versatile thermoplastic that can be molded into various shapes and sizes. It is available in several forms, including General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS):
GPPS (General Purpose Polystyrene): Known for its clarity, rigidity, and smooth surface.
HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene): Modified for increased impact resistance, making it tougher and more durable than GPPS.
Polystyrene's balance of strength, stiffness, and clarity makes it ideal for products that require visual appeal and structural stability.

Key Properties of Polystyrene (PS)

Polystyrene's unique combination of mechanical and aesthetic properties makes it a highly effective choice for a variety of applications:

1. High Rigidity and Strength
Polystyrene offers excellent stiffness and structural strength, making it suitable for parts that maintain shape and withstand light mechanical stress. Its rigidity makes molding into precise shapes and holding exact dimensions easy.

2. Clarity and Glossy Finish
GPPS is known for its crystal-clear appearance, allowing for high light transmission, similar to glass. This optical clarity and glossy finish are ideal for transparent applications such as display cases and covers.

3. Low Cost
Polystyrene is one of the most affordable thermoplastics, making it a practical choice for high-volume production and cost-sensitive projects. Its low cost, combined with efficient processing, helps manufacturers stay within budget without compromising on quality.

4. Ease of Processing
Polystyrene's flow characteristics make it easy to mold, allowing for fast cycle times and high throughput. This efficiency is especially beneficial in injection molding, where production speed can significantly impact cost-effectiveness.

5. Good Dimensional Stability
Polystyrene's low shrinkage rate and high dimensional stability ensure that parts maintain consistent size and shape, even in high-precision applications. This consistency is essential for products that require tight tolerances.

6. Lightweight
Polystyrene's low density makes it lightweight and ideal for applications like packaging, where reducing shipping weight can lead to cost savings.

What is PS Injection Molding?

product-1536-1024

PS (Polystyrene) injection molding is a highly efficient and cost-effective manufacturing process used to produce high-precision plastic parts with excellent clarity, dimensional stability, and rigidity. It is particularly suited for components that require a clean surface finish, tight tolerances, and optical performance.

Mould Design: PS moulding design emphasizes uniform wall thickness and sharp details to avoid sink marks and ensure visual consistency.
PS Injection Process: Polystyrene pellets are melted and injected into custom molds at relatively low processing temperatures, allowing for smooth flow and fast cycle times.
Cooling & Ejection: Rapid cooling is managed to maintain dimensional accuracy and reduce internal stress, especially for transparent parts.
Post-Processing: PS molded parts may undergo secondary operations like printing, coating, or ultrasonic welding to meet design and branding needs.

Advantages of PS Injection Molding

Polystyrene has a number of advantages that make it an ideal material for applications ranging from injection molded automotive parts to medical products. This thermoplastic has the following characteristics:

Transparent

In its pure form (GPPS), polystyrene is transparent with 90% light transmissibility. It provides a relatively inexpensive alternative to other transparent plastics, such as polycarbonate or acrylic. GPPS can be brittle, however, and that's why HIPS is sometimes used instead.

Tough and Rigid

HIPS polystyrene contains between 5% and 10% butadiene rubber so that it's tougher and more rigid. Applications include automotive instrument panels and computer housings.

Lightweight

Polystyrene is a lightweight plastic, which is why it's often used in food containers, consumer packaging, and even ceiling-mounted smoke detectors.

Moisture Resistant

Polystyrene is highly resistant to moisture, which makes it a good choice for plastic cutlery, and laboratory and scientific products such as test tubes and petri dishes.

Impact Resistant

Although GPPS has relatively low impact strength, HIPS is strong enough to be used for protective packaging and in repeated-use applications such as cafeteria food trays.

Dimensionally Stable

Injected molded polystyrene has excellent dimensional stability. This is due, in part, to its amorphous nature, which reduces shrinkage after injection molding. Also, because polystyrene doesn't absorb water, it won't swell and increase in size.

Radiation Resistant

Polystyrene has a kilogray (kGy) value of 10,000, which means it absorbs very little radiation. This radiation resistance is due to the benzene ring in polystyrene's molecular formula. Consequently, polystyrene can be subjected to radiation for sterilization purposes and won't suffer a significant degradation of mechanical properties.

What is PS injection molding process?

Injection molding
Polystyrene has good fluidity, good processing properties, easy coloring, and good dimensional stability. Available injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, foam, thermoforming, bonding, coating, welding, machining, printing and other methods of processing into a variety of parts, especially for injection molding.
In general, the material can be used directly without drying during injection molding. However, in order to improve the quality of the product, it can be pre-dried in the blast oven at 55~70℃ for 1~2h.
Specific processing conditions are roughly: barrel temperature of about 200 ℃, mold temperature of 60-80 ℃, injection molding temperature of 170-220 ℃, 60-150 MPa, compression ratio of 1.6-4.0.
After molding the product in order to eliminate the internal stress, can be in the infrared lamp or blast oven at 70 ℃ constant temperature treatment 2 ~ 4h.

Extrusion molding
Extrusion molding, the general use of the screw L/D ratio of 17 ~ 24, air cooling, extrusion temperature of 150 ~ 200 ℃.

Blow molding
Blow molding, injection molding and extrusion can be used to blow mold the desired products. Blow molding pressure is generally 0.1~0.3MPa.

What is Conditions of PS injection molding?

1. Drying treatment: Usually no drying treatment is required. If drying is required, the recommended drying conditions are 80C, 2~3 hours.

2. Melting temperature: 180~280C. For flame retardant material, the upper limit is 250C.

3. Plastic Injection Mold temperature: 40~50C. Injection pressure: 200~600bar.

4. Injection speed: fast injection speed is recommended.

5. Runners and gates: all conventional types of gates can be used.

6. Chemical and physical properties: Polystyrene has poor chemical stability, can be dissolved by a variety of organic solvents, will be strong acid and alkali corrosion, is not resistant to grease, easy to change color after exposure to ultraviolet light.

7. Polystyrene is hard and brittle, colorless and transparent, and can be mixed with a variety of dyes to produce different colors.

8.It is resistant to water, and dilutes inorganic acids, but can be corroded by strong oxidizing acids such as concentrated sulfuric acid, and can swell and deform in some organic solvents.

The Purposes of PS Injection Molding

In the manufacturing of plastic parts, PS injection molding is one of the most popular and efficient methods. The notable feature of this process is that it can produce parts with diverse shapes, precise dimensions, and stable quality.

One of the main purposes of PS injection molding is to be able to produce parts or products in large quantities. Polystyrene is particularly suitable for this purpose because it is relatively inexpensive and easy to mold.

Due to the controllability of the PS injection molding process, it can produce highly consistent parts. This is crucial in many industries with strict requirements for quality and dimensional accuracy.

At the same time, PS injection molding can accurately replicate complex geometric shapes, making it an ideal choice for manufacturing complex polystyrene parts. This is particularly applicable in industries such as electronics, automotive, and consumer goods that require complex and high-precision components.
